This sweet German word translates literally as ‘smouldering star rubbish’ – Schnuppe is from the Middle High German schnuppe, meaning snuff or the charred wick of a candle. Like many people around the world, Germans believe that falling stars grant wishes, on the condition you don’t tell anyone your secret desire.
